Reading, for me, is entertainment and an escape from the real world. But it can also inform and stretch the boundaries of the life I live.
The premise is interesting, and the final wrap-up is also interesting. The action-packed last few chapters were a lot of fun. I enjoyed some of the characters, too. The rest? Meh. The bulk of the story was incredibly slow-moving, with the story rambling all over the place. Like the best of SK’s novels, it was populated with an enormous number of assorted characters, whose stories all had to be told, but unlike the best of his novels, I could have done without most of them.
I finally figured out what was missing that usually brings most of King’s work to life for me. It’s missing the humor and the sly indulgence of the absurd that leavens the most horrible of his characters and the goriest of scenes. This book had Things To Say and it was Very Serious about all of them.
Overall, it’s worth reading, but I wouldn’t advise anyone to rush out to the bookstores for it.
