Portable Magic

Reading, for me, is entertainment and an escape from the real world. But it can also inform and stretch the boundaries of the life I live.

SPOILER ALERT!

Secret Window, Secret Garden ★★★☆☆

Two Past Midnight: Secret Window, Secret Garden - James Woods, Stephen King

Audio version from Overdrive.

This is one of the best examples of

the unreliable narrator

that I've read. King uses it to give us a deliciously slow reveal of

the truth of our main character, as he and we realize together that his perceptions of reality are more than a little off, and we come to understand that his wife may have had more reasons for her infidelity than just because she was a cheating bitch.

Had I been reading the bound version of this story, I'd have given it an enthusiastic four stars. But this is another unfortunate example of talented actors really sucking at audiobook performance. I love James Woods as an actor, but he reads with so much melodrama that I can't help but wonder if he sabotaged it on purpose. The production includes some truly horrendous and intrusive music, as well.
