I enjoyed this as much on this re-read as originally back in 1993, but there is some pretty cringeworthy stereotyping of a Vietnamese shopkeeper. It could be interpreted as the main character’s perceptions, rather than the author’s, but I don’t think so, as it's beside the point of the story.
