Re-read: The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling

Getting settled into a new school semester, I didn't want to embark on anything new, so I revisited the audio version of The Casual Vacancy. Two thoughts, on the re-read.

First, the ending still

made me cry, as I was even more forcibly struck by how many missed opportunities there were to save Robbie, when nearly every primary character walks past him wandering about alone, but is so self-absorbed that they don't bother to stop and help. On this second reading, it fit so completely with the author's subtext about society's responsibility to care for those who cannot care for themselves. Curiously, only Samantha seems to fully comprehend her own culpability in the little boy's death.

(show spoiler)

Second, JK Rowling is the undisputed all-time master of Chekhov's Gun.
